Falling in love.
No, I’m not referring to the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for a long time (if you should certainly just inform them currently)! I am speaing frankly about the head-over-heels feeling students sometimes get for one university on their list. There’s a distinction between having a choice that is first being so fixated on a school which you can not even fathom going elsewhere. You have got enough on your own dish year that is senior. If you don’t yet have a plan for how you’ll finish every one of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to take effect with our web log. Four years ago, I found myself where many of perhaps you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the perfect college. It absolutely was hard enough trying to navigate college applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued advanced schooling themselves. The stress of finding the place that is best to pay the next four years was extremely overwhelming.
As we think back at my college application process the first thing i need to say is, everything worked out much better than I could have ever anticipated. I never thought I would end up at USC when I applied to college. I grew up in Southern Gate, CA where only 6% associated with the total population pursues a college degree. It goes without saying, I never imagined i might find myself being the Student Body President my senior year here. The four years in between my senior year of high college and senior year of university have triggered a quantity of classes, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of most these unexpected life outcomes has indeed led me to where I am today.
Being pupil Body President at one of the more prestigious universities in the country can be an intimidating job. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who originate from over 100 different countries, are of all various races, and have really diverse economic backgrounds. However, it really is also a tremendously rewarding possibility. Every time I have to go into our student government office and get myself: how to make this college a better place for all students? That is our goal in student government, to create the greatest undergraduate experience, and that’s why I decided to run for this position spring that is last.
I spend at the least twenty hours each week listening to students’ experiences, asking them just how I could be of any service, and connecting them to the channels that are proper this campus. On one other part of things, we advocate on their behalf to administration in efforts generate better campus policies, address any issues, and plan money for hard times of our campus. My part that is favorite however taking the knowledge we discovered from both students and administrators and discovering unique solutions to addressing these problems.
In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggestions about improvements. During the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these imaginative proposals that we’ve been able to get our students free Uber rides from 7pm to 2 am and have gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the course of the 12 months our pupil government places on over 300 free events for our pupils. These consist of intimate discussions about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or performers like Diplo for our students to enjoy.
We shape the undergraduate experience and give students the ability to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is exactly what university is about. Regardless of whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new house, dare to challenge yourself and become challenged by others. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.
You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. College is time to explore and find your passion. I discovered my passion within student federal government and working towards increasing USC for current and students that are future. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get prepared to embark in a new journey full of unique and exciting experiences.
